There are plenty of accommodation options while attending school in Western Australia.

If your child is under 18 years old, they must have a local guardian in Australia.

Accommodation options
  • Homestay
  • Local carers
  • Family relative
Homestay

The homestay option is a popular choice and is available to students in Year 8 and above and is only available in the Perth metropolitan area. Regional placements will only be considered where a parent-nominated homestay can be arranged.

Australian Homestay Network (AHN) will organise student homestay accommodation in Western Australia. For details, refer to the Australian Homestay Network website. A homestay student will feel safe and secure in a homestay environment. It is also a great way to improve conversational English and experience the Australian lifestyle.

AHN Homestay students are provided with:

  • A supportive family environment to live in, including:
    • a clean fully furnished room
    • meals
    • utilities
  • 24/7 professional telephone support through AHN
  • contents insurance for students and hosts through AHN.
Local carers

The local carers option means you can nominate a host for your child. This option is available to students in Year 8 and above. The intended local carer host must register at AHN and identify themselves as nominated local carer when registering, stating on their registration profile the name of the student they wish to host. The local carer host must satisfy AHN’s selection process and background checks.

Family relative

Secondary school students may live with a close family relative who is over the age of 21 years, as defined by Division 1.2 of Migration Regulations. These regulations define a close family relative as a:

  • a parent
  • spouse
  • de facto partner
  • child
  • brother or sister of the applicant
  • step-child
  • step-parent
  • step-brother or step-sister of the applicant
  • grandparent
  • grandchild
  • aunt
  • uncle
  • niece or nephew
  • step-grandparent
  • step-grandchild
  • step-aunt
  • step-uncle
  • step-niece
  • step-nephew.

If your child intends to live with a relative and is under the age of 18, the relative must nominate as a guardian with the Department of Home Affairs using Form 157N Student guardianship arrangements.

Primary school students must reside with a parent for the duration of their studies.

We acknowledge and respect the traditional custodians of the lands and waters on which our students live and are educated throughout Western Australia.

We acknowledge and understand that Elders, parents, families and communities are the first educators of their children and we recognise and value the cultures and strengths that Aboriginal children bring to the classroom. Aboriginal people have a long tradition of teaching and learning through sharing their connections with country, community, language and culture, and through their oral histories, stories and lived experiences that are passed from generation to generation. We recognise and value the learning that Aboriginal children bring with them from their homes and communities into the classroom.
